Road

The A20 Motorway runs North / South between Paris and Toulouse and is located to the east of Sarlat. The exits to take are in the nearby towns of either Brive (50km away on the D1089/D60) or Souillac (30km away on the D803/D703). Both routes offer scenic drives into Sarlat.

Get onto the D47 and drive 60km via Les Eyzies. Approaching from the East, at Brive you can either get onto the A20and drive South to Souillac then take the exit onto the D803/D70303 to Sarlat or get straight onto the D1089/D60 for a 50km drive to Sarlat.

Train

Many of the surrounding towns and cities are well serviced by trains. Unfortunately Sarlat has few direct connections to these high speed links.

If travelling from Paris, the are a couple of options –

  1. Take the TGV from Gare Monparnasse to Bordeaux. The journey takes 3 hours and there are approximately 10 per day. At Bordeaux, you have a choice of -
    • a. Connecting to a train service that travels direct to Sarlat (a journey that takes 2 hours with 3-4 trips a day) or
    • b. pick up a hire car at Gare St Jean (most major hire car companies are located at the station) and take the A89. The car journey will take around 2 ½ hours and involve travelling on Toll Roads costing (at the time of writing) 12.50 Euros
  2. Take the express train from Gare Austerlitz. The journey takes 4 – 4 ½ hours and there are around 6 trips per day. You can either –
If travelling from Toulouse, take the Paris bound train as far as Souillac or Brive and use the option mentioned above. If travelling directly from the eastern regions of France, then Brive is more than likely the rail hub that you should end up at. From there, hire a car or travel via rail to Souillac then the bus to Sarlat.
